ORCHESTRA - Royal Academic Orchestra

The Royal Academic Orchestra is the Uppsala University symphony orchestra, with roots from 1627. The orchestra was the first university orchestra in Sweden and is one of the oldest in Europe. The Royal Academic Orchestra gives regular concerts, participates in the University’s academic festivities and tours in Sweden and abroad. 
 

CONDUCTOR - Stefan Karpe

Stefan Karpe studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, with Professor Jorma Panula and led his diploma concert in 1992, with Mahler’s Symphony #4. Karpe has conducted most orchestras in Sweden and, among other activities, has been an assistant to Esa-Pekka Salonen together with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London. For several years he has worked with the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, with music by Stravinsky and Claude Vivier, among others.

Karpe has conducted in France, England, Spain, and Norway and has performed many concerts in Finland. Among other things, Karpe inaugurated the Helsinki Festival together with the City Orchestra of Helsinki in 1996 and gave an EBU concert with the chamber orchestra Avanti!. He has also conducted in Australia several times and toured that continent with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra. In the summer of  2001 Karpe worked at the Aix-en-Provence Festival with Verdi’sFalstaff. The same production was performed in the spring of 2002 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris. Karpe has been director musices and professor of orchestra conducting at Uppsala University since January 2002.

 

DAVID WESTERLUND - Presenter and pianist

Born in 1979, David had the fortune of growing up alongside Nintendo´s first major console, the 8-bit, and has followed the development of videogames and especially their music ever since. David started playing piano at the age of 2, and learned most of his playing from picking out tunes from videogames. Despite having piano as his main instrument, he is also a competent singer, drummer and guitarist. He currently works as a concert arranger at Game Music Entertainment and as a music teacher, having graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm, where he currently gives lectures about videogame music. In 2010 he produced the videogame concert "Castlevania The Concert" in Stockholm.

 

SOPRANO - Alexandra Büchel
